New year, new you, right? Well, maybe not. 2020 is finally over, but its energy may still be lingering. With working from home getting (really) old, you might find yourself falling behind, being less productive, and with overall low motivation.  Capricorns are known for their diligent and disciplined work ethic. With this sign ruling from December 21st through January 21st, there's no better way to ramp up the new year than with a little go-getter Cap energy. Here are some tips and tricks to stay on track with your work from home routine.


Turn your work space into your ideal office

Whether you’re in a cubicle sized apartment or you have a full sized home office, changing up something about the room you work in will provide it with new energy. Adding a  potted plant to your desk or a hanging plant from your window is a great way to boost productivity. Studies have shown that where plants are present, work  productivity increases by as much as 15%. A little greenery is magic.


 

Keep your surroundings calm and neutral

Capricorn’s  color spectrum includes dark neutrals. Rich blacks and space rock greys symbolize maturity and discipline for this sign. Keeping your workspace clean and tidy, with accents of neutrals like blacks and greys, will leave little visual interruption for your mind to fixate on. 


Break up your day with something stress-free

Staring at a screen from 9am to 5pm every day isn’t good for your eyes, and  sitting all day isn't great for your posture or internal organs either. Even if just for a few minutes every hour or two, getting up and moving is essential. Do 50 squats every hour to get your heart rate moving. Hang like a rag-doll for 1 minute between meetings to stretch your hamstrings and lower back. Go for a walk during lunch, or take a screen-free break to do something creative.  

Of course we’re biased, but it’s great to give yourself something nice to look at while typing away on your keyboard all day. A quick at-home manicure is the best way to feel pampered and to close your laptop for about 20 minutes. Extra bonus points if you stand at the counter instead of sitting while doing this. Quit Multitasking

Just about every job description includes a line about the ability to multitask. Multitasking is something we have been taught the supposed importance and value of, but did you know that studies have shown multitasking to actually reduce work productivity by about  40%? Our brains aren’t wired to handle multiple tasks at once, and doing so means switching gears back and forth between tasks repeatedly. It’s inefficient, and it really means you’re losing time and probably being sloppy too. By focusing on one task and seeing it through, your work will be more thorough, more efficient, and you’ll feel way less scatterbrained. 


This fast-paced mentality also makes unwinding, feeling present, and  mindfulness more difficult. Even while trying to relax while watching TV or taking a bath, you might find yourself reaching for your phone for yet another source of  mental stimulation. So many rapidly changing stimulus inputs at all hours of the day make it difficult to feel settled with none or even just one, so it’s important to train your brain to work with less. This means that post-work relaxation is directly connected to your work productivity and task-handling. Who knew?
