NYFW has taken over the city debuting the newest styles and innovative designs but there's so much that goes into a look before it's sent down the catwalk. Backstage makeup artists, nail artists, and hair stylists work hard to create a full fashion experience. As NYFW comes to a close we chatted with fellow Makeup Artist, Theo Turner, and Nail Artist, Gina Edwards on their expertise and their most memorable NYFW moments.

Theo Turner, International Celebrity MUA

Headshot of Theo Turner, MUAHow long have you been doing makeup?

I have been doing makeup since 2007! I have always had an infinity for all things art, starting my career out as a musician.

Which NYFW shows have you done in the past?

I have been very fortunate to work several NYFW Shows like: Zimmerman, Laquan Smith, Alexander Wang, B Michael, Betsy Johnson, Marc Jacobs, Marchesa, Michael Kors and Anna Sui to name a few.

Which upcoming NYFW shows are you most excited about?

I am always excited to see Laquan Smith and can’t wait to see the Legendary Thom Browne show return to NYFW this season on Valentine’s Day!

Can you describe a runway look you’re most proud of and why?

I am most proud of ALL of the looks I have been fortunate enough to create for different designers. My favorite designer to be a key artist for would have to be B Michael, where I was the key artist from 2012-2017. I don’t remember the exact season but the first season I was afforded the opportunity to work with Phylicia Rashad was life changing! I can remember the sense of pride watching her and her daughter Condola rule the runway!

When you are doing makeup, where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in everything around me, starting with my MUSE! I work with their natural beauty and aura. I then enhance it in a way that promotes their individual confidence.

What’s a must-have product you keep in your kit for shows and what do you love the most about that product?

This is a hard one … so many things are important but if I had to show up to a show with one thing, it would be my brushes or an AMAZING makeup remover! A lot of times models are coming from other shows and already have glam that needs to be removed and FAST!

What’s the secret to achieving a runway ready base?

ITS ALL IN THE PREP! Having a variety of products to ensure a perfectly prepped base for any skin tone or texture is key! Everyone will not require the same things, but the end result must be as cohesive as possible.

Gina Edwards, Nail Artist

How long have you been doing nails?

I’ve been doing nails for over 20 years now.

Which NYFW shows have you done in the past?

I’ve been fortunate to work on some of the most prestigious shows. Carolina Herrera, Alexander Wang, Johnathon Simkai, Michael Kors and Pyer Moss to name a few.

Which upcoming NYFW shows are you most excited about?

I just completed my first show with Prabal Gurung and Pat Bo is today then Love Shack Fancy.

Can you describe a runway nail design you’re most proud of and why?

That’s asking a mother who her favorite child is. For starters, I adore all the looks I created but if I had to pick one of the most challenging and creative nail designs for runway it would be Pyer Moss which I did with EH … show stopping!

When you are doing nails, where do you find inspiration?

I am inspired by color and how colors you wouldn’t normally put together can come together in the most organic way.

What’s a must-have product you keep in your kit for shows and what do you love the most about that product?

The Hand Creams from Emilie Heathe because of their fast absorbing formula.

What’s the best technique to use when applying crystals to the nails?

The best way to apply crystals is to use a high velocity glue, thick in texture.
